I predict insta-torque is going to win

If one had not jumped the light, it would have lost. That is all.

If you take a look at the printout, you'll see that it was just a perfect prediction; the Tesla driver's reaction time was a ridiculous .005 seconds (unless this is a default if you overshoot your guess).

.... and a test that has been done since the 80's has the same result now. Electric cars have always been able to compete with standard fuel cars in drag racing because it's short and in a straight line. The problem has never been the motors ability to produce required torque, the problem has been the batteries weight and ability to store enough energy for an actual race. In fact people build electric cars in their garage all the time that can beat a vett in the 1/4 mile.

Throw those two out on Laguna Seca and the out come would be reversed.

Very true, I want to see Musk make a much longer lasting battery pack, I was a detractor of electric cars for a long time, then I drove the Model S P85, holy frack that car is astonishing.

The S is remarkable, but still too heavy. No matter what magic you work with suspension and brakes, the weight is still there. I would totally drive one around daily if it was given to me, but I would never buy one. After test driving them there are just too much better performing sedans that are well rounded and much much cheaper. They really tried to down play it at the Tesla event, but that's their goal as marketing peeps.

As soon as battery tech reaches a place to make it practical to build electric cars on par with gasoline cars, I will be excited. It will be a whole new segment to tune and mod.

Let's point out some key differences here.

I know what the printout says, but I'm certain the Tesla jumped the gun. It was moving before the green. I could be wrong. But still.

The Corvette won by a much larger margin the second time, than the Tesla the first.

And crucially, the Vette is an automatic. A manual probably would have been quicker.

Also, it sounds way better, and at right around half the cost.

It is heavy but that instant torque makes all of that go away. When I drove my uncles, we had 5 full grown adult males in the car, worth another 1000lbs, I timed it, we were still hitting 0-60mph in under 5secs, its just mind blowing. I still don't really like the steering, its a bit too vague, I think they need to weight it a bit better, but overall it made me a believer, I'm not saying that I will give up my gas and hp and noise anytime soon, but damn does that car make a statement.

Nope nope nope. It makes it accelerate fine, but that's only a tiny portion of the performance equation. The problem has never been acceleration. We can get 5000 HP out of both electric motors and combustion engines. The problem is doing so while also making the vehicle go around a corner. The S does not corner nearly as well as it's competition due to the extra weight. The steering becomes extremely vague due to the stabilization and disconnect attempting to hide the weight and changing direction becomes a chore even with vectoring at each wheel.

It just can't get there until it can shed a few thousand pounds.... and refill in 30 seconds. The refueling issue isn't as important as the weight issue in my mind.
